What is the function of a nerve cell?
Nerve cells serve an important function in our bodies to relay information as electrical signals from the periphery to the central nervous system.
What are the functions of our brain cells?
The human brain is the command center for the human nervous system. It receives signals from the body's sensory organs and outputs information to the muscles.
What are the two main categories of cells?
There are two types of cell, prokaryotic (bacteria) and eukaryotic (animal, plant, fungi and protoctista (unicellular organisms)).
What are Eukaryotic Cells?
Eukaryotic cells are cells that contain a nucleus and organelles, and are enclosed by a plasma membrane. Organisms that have eukaryotic cells include protozoa, fungi, plants and animals.
List down the parts of the cell and their special functions
1. Plasma membrane:
The primary function of the plasma membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings.
2. Cytoplasm:
Cytoplasm is responsible for giving a cell its shape. It helps to fill out the cell and keeps organelles in their place. Without cytoplasm, the cell would be deflated and materials would not be able to pass easily from one organelle to another.
3. Ribosomes:
Ribosomes are a cell structure that makes protein. Protein is needed for many cell functions such as repairing damage or directing chemical processes.
4. DNA:
DNA contains the instructions needed for an organism to develop, survive and reproduce.
5. Golgi apparatus:
A major function is the modifying, sorting and packaging of proteins for secretion. It is also involved in the transport of lipids around the cell, and the creation of lysosomes
6. Mitochondria:
Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell. They are organelles that act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell.
